Accessibility statement for The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service Website

This accessibility statement applies to qavs.dcms.gov.uk. It does not apply to the web application hosted on apply.dcms.gov.uk – this service is in the process of being replaced by October 2021, when we will update this statement.

This website is run by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate all of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to all of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • PDF documents contain content that will be converted to HTML
  • Some headings do not follow a sequentially descending order
  • Some images with captions are displayed in reversed order compared to the DOM order (captions are visually displayed on top, but are below in code)

Disproportionate burden

Navigation and accessing information

There’s no way to skip the repeated content in the page header (for example, a ‘skip to main content’ option).

It’s not always possible to change the device orientation from horizontal to vertical without making it more difficult to view the content.

It’s not possible for users to change text size without some of the content overlapping.

Interactive tools and transactions

Our interactive map that displays awardees on a map is difficult to navigate using a keyboard.

We’ve assessed the cost of fixing the issues with navigation and accessing information, and with interactive tools and transactions. We believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. We will make another assessment when the supplier contract is up for renewal, likely to be in 12 months.

The application form for the Queen’s Awards for Voluntary service is a separate transactional system that is soon to be replaced with an accessible version.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are non-essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with additional information on how users can access our services, and a list of the awardees. By September 2021, we plan to either fix these or replace them with accessible HTML pages.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
